Exploring architecture of the Weimar Republic

Neues Bauen is German for “New Building” or “New Constructing” and refers to the new methods and principles of early modernist architecture in the 1920s.

Moving away from the ornate, historicist styles of the past, this era focused on functionality and simplicity, and improving living conditions through well-designed spaces.

What sets these buildings apart from later modern architecture is their attention to subtle details and a sense of craftsmanship. They capture both the forward-thinking spirit of the time, but also its tensions. Here, we’ll explore their distinct characteristics, from avant-garde functionalism to Expressionist influences and traditionalist approaches.

I started this little old-school website to share my interest in early modern architecture, and bring back some of the fun of the old internet. More content will follow soon!

Have fun exploring the site and learning about Weimar Republic architecture, and make sure to add your own 1920s building to the guestbook!
